DCU majors in media awards

Dublin City University (DCU) was the big winner at the Oxygen.ie Smedias national student media awards last night taking ten awards in all. DCU student Samuel Hamilton was named journalist of the year and was presented with the magazine award. Stephen Mangan was voted both top sports and feature writer.

Joanne Hunt was voted national press journalist, James Foley won photographer of the year and James Alford was the top radio DJ. TCD’s The University Times was named newspaper of the year. It was the fourth year running a Trinity newspaper took the award, beating campus rival and last year’s winner, Trinity News.

The newspaper award, sponsored by The Irish Times,  was accepted by Robert Donoghue and Conor Smith. Eoin McVey, managing editor, The Irish Times, praised the paper’s layout and editorial tone. TCD’s Martin McKenna and Dan Sheehan were the respective winners of the web design and short story awards.

Caitriona Laverty of UCD won editor of the year for The University Observer. The award sponsor was the Irish Independent. Other Smedias’ sponsors were Spar, Irish Daily Star, TG4, Truro, Bulmers and Nestle’s Aero.
