Toure tops English pay league

Yaya Toure has become the highest paid footballer in England’s Premier League earning a reported €224,000 a week as part of a five-year transfer deal agreed with Manchester City. The Ivory Coast midfielder moved from Champions League finalists Barcelona in a €29 million deal last week.

Toure’s five-year contract is said to be worth €67m in all. His wages will start at €224,000 a week rising to €267,000 when government tax changes are introduced. Manchester City is captained by Yaya Toure’s brother, Kolo, who, along with Emmanuel Adebayor, joined from Arsenal last season.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is known to be a fan of Yaya Toure. There were rumours of him moving to the Emirates as part of a deal which would see Cesc Fabregas return to the Nou Camp. But Barca’s valuation of Toure and Arsenal’s reluctance to pay high transfer fees and wages worked against it.
