Twomey to take charge at ASAI

Orla Twomey, Assistant Chief Executive of the ASAI with Catherine Bent ASAI Board Member

Orla Twomey is to become chief executive of the Advertising Standards Authority of Ireland (ASAI) when the current CEO Frank Goodman steps down in December. Twomey has been the ASAI assistant chief executive for over 11 years. She has a first class honours in marketing studies from the Institute of Public Administration (IPA) course at the NUI.

Twomey was chosen from three final contenders for the job. In her new role she will report to the ASAI board, direct authority services and ensure the continued development of stategic policy and the achievement of objectives. She will also advise the board and the complaints committee on regulatory issues, legal requirements and governance matters.

The aim is to ensure all marketing communications are “legal, decent, honest and truthful”.

Revised rules for media advertising, digital campaigns and promotions for gambling and e-cigarettes are part of a new code which were recently announced by the ASAI. Code updates on food, health and beauty and environmental claims have also been issued. The seventh edition of the ASAI code is due to come into play in March of next year.

Goodman has been ASAI’s chief executive for 11 years, before which he held a similar role at the Legal Aid Board and worked with the Ombudsman’s Office. Twomey, left, is pictured with ASAI board member and former Mars Ireland’s head of marketing, Catherine Bent.
