Coke again Ireland’s top grocery brand

Coca-Cola remains in number one position in Ireland’s list of the top 100 grocery brands produced by Checkout magazine using Nielsen data. While Coke continues to lead the top 100 for the 15th year in a row, Brennans bread (third), Avonmore (fourth), and Tayto (sixth) all make the top 10, indicating the loyalty Irish consumers have for local food brands.

Mondelez’s Cadbury Dairy Milk was ranked second.

Among the Irish brands making most headway in this year’s top 100 list is Fulfil, which rises eight places from 49th to 41st position. Although the protein bar was only launched three years ago, it has performed strongly in the top 100 since it first entered the rankings in 68th place two years ago. It then managed to vault up to 49th place last year.

Carroll Meats rises seven places this year, from 55th place to 48th in the league table.  Vit-Hit enters the top 100 in 73rd position, establishing itself as the top brand in the health/functional drinks category. Like Fulfil, Vit-Hit is distributed in Ireland by Richmond Marketing and retails in Sainsbury’s, WH Smith, Boots, Carrefour and Delhaize.

This year’s biggest mover is Cushelle tissues, climbing 21 places from the 99th position in 2018 to 78th in 2019. The Checkout top 100 brand rankings is based on branded value sales across the Irish grocery market. In compiling the report, Nielsen measures the sales performance of over 5,000 brands from over 200 food and drink categories.

Once again, the category with the most brands in the top 100 is confectionery, with 12 brands featuring in the rankings this year: Cadbury Dairy Milk, Kinder, Lindt, Maltesers, Haribo, Galaxy, Nestlé Kit Kat, Cadbury Twirl, M&M’s, Cadbury Wispa, Cadbury Snack and Nestlé Rowntree. Heineken is the top alcohol brand overall, while Santa Rita is the top wine.

One of the most noteworthy developments in the top 50 alcohol list this year is the performance of Gordon’s Dry Gin – after an exceptional 18-place jump last year, it has made another big leap by moving up 10 places from 21st in 2018 to 11th this year. However, Peroni Nastro Azzurro rose 16 places, from its debut 47th place in 2018 to 31st in 2019.

It makes Peroni Nastro Azzurro the best-performing brand in the 2019 Top 50 list.

Irish company Strong Roots, which leapt into second position in the frozen prepared vegetables category in 2018, has dropped down to third this year, but the company retains its third place position in frozen chips. The Happy Pear climbed to second place in the prepared/savoury dips category from the fourth-place position in which it entered in 2017.
