The death of US senator Ted Kennedy and the wedding of pop star Andrea Corr were the two most popular search topics on Google in August from Irish online users. Kennedy searches rose by over 5,000 per cent in the days following his death, Google reported.
Searches for ‘Andrea Corr wedding’ were up by 3,000 at the end of August. The controversy surrounding the gender of South African athlete Caster Semenya, who won two gold medals at the World Athletic Championships in Berlin, was another popular search.
Lance Armstrong’s participation in the Tour of Ireland cycle race, X Factor, the Rose of Tralee and the return of the English Premier League all ranked highly. Google added a feature to its customised iGoogle page which gives football fans match updates.
