The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) has received 227 submissions in response to its public consultation on how food and drink should be advertised to children in the broadcast media. The BAI says responses came from members of the public, broadcasters, politicians, NGOs, food and drink groups and other lobbyists.
Launched in August, the consultation forms part of a BAI review of diet and nutrition rules contained in its Children’s Commercial Communications Code. The submissions will be reviewed by the BAI executive and by experts in advertising and nutrition science and presented to the authority for consideration next month.
BAI chief executive Michael O’Keeffe (above) thanked all of those who made submissions to this phase of the consultation process. He said the response clearly showed the strong interest that exists about the issue.
In the event that the BAI decides to propose amendments to the existing rules, a second public consultation on a draft set of revised rules will be undertaken. Any such development is likely to happen by early next year.
