Media agency Carat has raised €15,000 for Crumlin Children’s Hospital through its Carathon charity softball tournament which this year was held in Wanderers Rugby Club last Thursday. With over 200 people in attendance, made up of 17 media owner teams, from the Independent to Nova, TV3 to i-Believe, as well as four Carat teams, the tournament got underway at 2.45pm.
Despite some set-backs, including a broken collarbone on the Sunday World team, some seriously slippery grass and moody weather, the spirits remained high in what quickly became a battle to the death. Ultimately, it was UTV Radio Solutions v Carat and News Ireland v INM that made it to the semi-finals. After fiercely competitive semi-finals, the final saw News Ireland and Carat go head to head.
Carat was named the overall winner for the first time in Carathon history.
The trophy was presented to the winning Carat team before Ciaran Cunningham was asked to take part in the #IceBucketChallenge. Ever the good sport, he willingly obliged and was drenched by Dave Winterlich with ice-cold water. The Carathon started in 2011 by cycling the equivalent length of Ireland on exercise bikes. It was two years ago when the event became bigger with the launch of the softball tournament.
