Most Irish adults use parents’ washing machine

Almost three quarters or 72 per cent of Irish adults admit to still using their parents’washing machine with slightly fewer asking their parents to do their washing for them. One in six, or 17 per cent, say cleaning is the worst thing about moving out of home for the first time. Most Irish people with children use their washing machines five times a week.

The survey by Censuswide for Beko home appliances claims that when it comes to laundry advice six in 10 of the 1,003 interviewees said they would ask their mother for laundry advice compared to six per cent who would ask their father. Laundry duties was voted the third worst thing about leaving home, followed closely by cooking and cleaning.

The laundry or washing battle reaches a peak for those in their thirties, the cohort most likely to see washing as the worst household chore. No wonder, considering Irish people living with children are likely to use their washing machine 260 times a year. Most people without kids tend to use their washing machine 208 times a year, or four times a week.

When it comes to making excuses, one in 12 respondents said their parents did their washing because they could not be bothered, while around one in 10 of those interviewed said their parents did their washing because they always do it. One in seven travelled for over an hour and up to two hours to get their parents to do their washing for them.
