Netflix reduces bandwidth to avoid gridlock

Entertainment brand Netflix has temporarily reduced bandwidth used by its streaming service in Europe, cutting video bit rates by a quarter at the behest of the EU to ease the load on internet networks and avoid gridlock. The move, which applies until mid-April, follows talks between the EU industry chief Thierry Breton and Netflix chief executive Reed Hastings.

The EU urged the company to make the switch to lower standard-definition video to ease congestion on networks during the coronavirus pandemic. The change is limited to Netflix’s European network. The company reported 51.8 million paid subscribers as of the end of last year, which represents a 31 per cent share of its worldwide customer base.

This Tuesday sees the launch of the new Disney + subscription service. One of the big draws is expected be The Mandorian, which sees a lone gunman tasked with tracking down the ‘Child’, better known as Baby Yoda from Star Wars.
