20 Questions with Sarah McInerney, RTÉ Radio 1

Sarah McInerney is a broadcaster, journalist and columnist. She presents Today with Sarah McInerney weekday mornings on RTÉ Radio 1 and writes an opinion column in The Sunday Times. She has presented various shows across RTÉ television and radio. She hosted Drive on Newstalk, winning IMRO current affairs show of the year and IMRO news broadcaster of the year. She is the author of Where No One Can Hear You Scream, a book about women who were murdered or disappeared in the Dublin and Wicklow mountains.

01 What was your earliest ambition?

To be the US president

A negroni over ice, please. Stirred, not shaken

Twitter, but only when I have my boxing gloves on

Vincent Browne. Always questioning the consensus

The Cretaceous period at the end of the Mesozoic era

From Hilary Mantel to Lee Child – depends on my mood

Jurassic Park

My husband

09 Something that no longer happens that you miss?

The excitement when the only phone in the house – a landline – used to ring, and everyone would rush for it. The mystery of not knowing who was calling

10 Desert island pet: Dog or cat?

Is this even a serious question? Who would choose a cat?

11 Favourite ad?

The one airing right now, showing a grandad and grandson having a facetime playdate. It reminds me of my son and my mother

12 Are you an early adopter? What’s new?

13 A brand to which you feel some loyalty?

Everything Apple, their gadgets run my life

14 Someone you might be starstruck to meet?

Beyoncé

15 Something that recently brought a tear to your eye?

While presenting my radio show, hearing from the shattered, devastated parents of a 15-year-old boy who had died

16 Something that recently got your goat?

The ‘oversight’ which led to women on maternity leave not being eligible for the Covid-19 wage subsidy scheme

17 What would be your fantasy act of heroism?

Switching the gender profile of our politicians overnight

18 You’ve won the Euromillions and disappeared. Where might we find you?

19 Someone or something that strikes you as beautiful?

My baby, when he sees or feels something new. It was windy last week and he held his hand up in the air, transfixed. It stopped me in my tracks
