A group of 12 staff at marketing communications company Core will again head off to spend a week with Mama Leah, Patricia and the children in Terrys orphanage in Kenya. Over the past year, the money Core raised helped build new sheds and a proper feeding and milking area for the cows that were bought. CCTV was also installed in the compound for security.
Core is supporting the efforts of the charity Help Us Give Smiles (Hugs), which works with Terry Child Support and youth resource centre in Machakos, a community-based body that counters the plight of orphans and other less fortunate children. Hugs gives people from all walks of life a chance to take part in short-term overseas charity projects in Kenya.
Those that travel with the charity are known as ‘huggers’.
Eddie O’Mahony (above), chief investment officer, Core, described the support of friends, families and the media as “incredible”. On their coming trip to Kenya, they will be helping builders revamp the dorms where the children sleep. It is much needed work and events that Core has run this year will help fund the work, which was given the go-ahead recently.
In advance of this year’s trip to Kenya, Core has set up an everyday hero charity page to raise some extra funds to help buy much needed clothing and shoes for the children. All donations, large or small, are most welcome and every euro raised on the page will go to buying clothing for the youngsters before the Core group flies out in the coming weeks.
