Newstalk is in the pink this October as it joins Centra, Boots, Esso and Curves in support of the Irish Cancer Society (ICS) Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The station is showing its support for the Action Breast Cancer programme which provides information and support services to thousands of women across Ireland. Newstalk has come on board as a media partner and will feature stories on breast cancer during October.
One in ten women in Ireland will get breast cancer and over 2,500 women will be newly-diagnosed with breast cancer this year. Three quarters of these women will be over 50. An average of 621 women die from breast cancer each year. The Irish Cancer Society’s Action Breast Cancer supports thousands of women who are concerned about breast cancer and breast health and urges all women to be more aware.
The programmes over the last ten years has meant that women are now detecting changes sooner, leading to earlier diagnosis. It means that over 80 per cent of women are surviving breast cancer for five years or longer, an increase of 10.6 per cent on rates between 2002 – 2006. The ICS also invests in breast cancer research, improving breast cancer diagnosis and treatments.
