Shortlist for NNI journalism awards

Newspapers Pile

The final shortlist has been announced for this year’s National Newspapers of Ireland (NNI) journalism awards with 121 contenders in 20 categories, including the new foreign, digital, news analysis, news reporter and campaign categories. Almost 800 entries were submitted to the judging panel comprising 16 press journalists.

Chairman of the judging panel, former INM director and Hume Brophy director Michael Brophy said there was a 40 per cent increase in entries this year and with more depth and diversity.  He said newspapers invest more in journalism than any other medium and the quality of work entered confirms the investment value.

“It really brought home the fact that newspaper journalism is about so much more than ‘the news’,” Brophy added. “The news is vital but so are detailed investigative reporting, comment, analysis and specialist writing on a whole range of topics. These aspects of journalism have the potential to change society for the better.”

The winners, including Journalist of the Year, will be announced at a ceremony in the Four Seasons on November 7. Guest speaker will be Mick Hume, editor-at-large of Spiked. Today FM’s The Last Word presenter and Sunday Times columnist Matt Cooper will be the MC. The NNI shortlist is outlined in full below:
