SuperValu has signed up as title sponsor of the Big Day Out in tandem with the St. Patrick’s Festival. The Musgrave brand, which had €2.1 billion in sales last year, invests €4.5 million in community events. SuperValu has supported Tidy Towns for 22 years and became title sponsor two years ago. The chain has supported the GAA football championship for the last four years. Stores invest a further €2 million in local events.
The SuperValu Big Day Out is a free event for 80,000 people. Children can attend food workshops on the day in the SuperValu tent where they can have fun creating art from various Irish foods. SuperValu supplies food on the day. The retailer spends €1.6bn on goods produced or sourced in Ireland each year. SuperValu stocks 100 per cent Irish beef, lamb, pork, bacon and chicken, all born, bred and reared in Ireland.
Musgrave says SuperValu will create 300 new jobs this year as part of €20m investment programme. The chain employs 12,000 people across its 195 stores. It plans to open three new stores this year and revamp 40 more stores. Greenfield sites will open this year in Celbridge, Co Kildare and Milltown Malbay in Co Clare.
