Agencies net new Sharks

Work from over 24 countries was celebrated at the 49th Kinsale Sharks International Advertising Festival. Jury member Chacho Puebla, who is executive creative director and partner of Lola/Lowe Madrid, said the work was the finest seen in the world this year.

Among the big winners were BBDO New York, Leo Burnett Worldwide, Euro RSCG, Wieden & Kennedy, Saatchi UK, and AMV BBDO. ITV and Fox TV, Aardman Animation, BDA Creative, Chellomedia, Rushes, Publicis Conseil, Axis animation and RKCR Y&R.

The festival’s inaugural design awards went to The Chase UK, Arc Worldwide, Havas, Coy Communications and Leo Burnett Toronto. BBDO New York was voted agency of the year and BBDO network of the year. Wieden + Kennedy Amsterdam won the grand prix for their Nike spot, Write the Future. Andreas Roth was named best new international film director.

Agencies Boys and Girls, Chemistry, DDFH&B-JWT, Irish International, Leo Burnett, Ogilvy, QMP Publicis and Rothco were Irish winners, along with production houses Windmill Lane and Blinder. Vincent Gallagher was named best new Irish film director.

Driving Force

Damien McLoughlin, professor of marketing, UCD Smurfit Graduate School, presented Tim Griffiths, OMD, with a gold for the Renault Scrappage scheme media campaign.

For the first time ever, media campaigns were honoured at the Sharks and six gold awards went to Irish agencies. Starcom won two golds, one for SuperValu and another for the National Lottery’s EuroMillions. Carat won gold for Kellogg’s Field of Dreams, OMD for Renault Scrappage, Mediacom for Audi A1 and Vizeum for Powers Whiskey.

Next year’s Sharks festival will be the award show’s 50th anniversary. Festival organiser Tanya Cawley said various major events are planned and a number of special guests will attend. Overseas media agencies will be invited to enter campaigns for the first time.

The big Irish winner at the Sharks was TG4’s Seven Signatures print work by Publicis QMP. The ads, saluted at the National Newspapers of Ireland (NNI) awards, won two golds, a silver and two bronze in Kinsale. BBDO was the big international winner.
